Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian claret jug is a specialized vessel designed in the nineteenth century for decanting and serving red Bordeaux wine, commonly known in Britain as claret. These items typically feature a glass body paired with a decorative metal lid, spout, and handle made from sterling silver or silver plate.

Most historic claret jugs were constructed using lead crystal or blown glass, which was often hand-engraved, acid-etched, or cut with geometric patterns. The collars, handles, hinged lids, and spouts were usually crafted from electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or solid sterling silver.

Authentic pieces usually display manufacturer hallmarks or electroplate stamps (such as EPNS) on the collar or inner lid rim. Additionally, period items demonstrate precise hand-engraving or diamond-cut glasswork, alongside signs of hand-fitted metal mounts appropriate to nineteenth-century production methods.

An antique claret jug can be displayed on a dining table, side cabinet, or bar cart as a decorative accent. It integrates well alongside modern glassware to create a layered, eclectic table arrangement during formal dining.

Wash the glass interior by hand using warm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive pads. Clean silver-plated mounts gently with a non-abrasive silver polishing cloth to prevent removing the thin layer of silver plating, ensuring the piece is completely dried afterwards to avoid oxidisation.
