Kurd-bidjar Long Rug, Persia, Circa 1870, 2.90m X 1.38m

19th century
Description

Although ostensibly this striking rug resembles late 19th century Bidjar weaving, the graphics are clearly inspired by earlier Kurdish rugs and in all likelihood it was woven by Kurdish weavers. It has an all wool foundation and a wonderful range of colours, including the a lovely light blue, terracotta, and the undyed camel's hair in the field. The ornamentation is archaic and dramatic, and includes Persian lions, camels, eagle style medallions and single botehs. It is a feast for the eyes. The field is framed by an elegantly drawn repeating floral border in lovely shades of terracotta and light blue. It is a truly charismatic rug and the height of Persian village weaving. This rug has survived in good condition. There is some abrasion to the pile and the selvages have been restored in places. Professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kurd-Bidjar rugs were woven by Kurdish artisans in north-western Persia, combining robust hand-knotted construction with distinct geometric medallions and tribal motifs.

These rugs were crafted using hand-spun wool yarns for both the pile and foundation, dyed with traditional vegetable and mineral dyes.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-spun wool irregularities, natural dye abrash shade variations, hand-bound selvedges, and minor structural asymmetries typical of village loom weaving.

A long rug or gallery format carpet functions effectively in entryways, wide corridors, or positioned at the foot of a bed to anchor room proportions.

Preservation requires gentle suction vacuuming without a rotating brush bar, annual rotation to balance foot traffic, and specialist hand-cleaning designed for historic textiles.
