A super opportunity to purchase an original finish Regency armchair over 200 years old and in untouched condition is quite rare, this is the best example of this type of work I have ever seen, either made by or under the influence of the great George Smith 1786-1826, a similar pair that were restored sold in Christies on January 27th 2023 for $63,000 USD which with the buyers premium came to exactly $79,380 USD, they were restored as mentioned so they didn''t have the original finish
...like these which is way more desirable, its easy to find and buy restored furniture, something is only ever original once and this is it
The curved upholstered back with a molded frame continuing to naturalistically modeled monopodia legs, with gilded lion’s heads forming the arms with lobed collars above hairy manes, and with paw feet, the back legs of similar form, the
George Smith was a London designer, cabinet maker and upholsterer (c.1786–1826). He is described on the title page of his ambitious and influential pattern book ''A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration'' 1808, as ‘upholder extraordinary to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales’ with designs strictly adhering to original antique forms minimally altered for ''modern'' use.
The following year George Smith, Thomas Hope''s disciple, began his series of publications, in the most Approved and Elegant Taste which was well-received and continued through the late 1820''s. Monopodia supports of all variations can be seen in the designs by these two men. The shapes are almost always architectural, sturdy and massive, if not monumental.
As mentioned, the finish is original and without amendment, we have cleaned waxed and polished the timber, there will be patina all over and some small timber loss on the inside of one of the back legs, the upholstery looks to be Victorian but I could be wrong, its antique and in wonderful order, I have removed the old base cover as it had perished and left it exposed so you can see the frame construction is 100% correct for the period, each leg retains the original minature brass castor which work perfectly
