Japanese Satsuma Hotei and Karako, Late Meiji, C.1890

Description

A well-executed Japanese Satsuma earthenware group of Hotei with a Chinese-style child (karako), late Meiji, circa 1890. Hotei holds a folding fan (ogi) and the strap of his treasure sack; the child plays a pellet drum with a tomoe device. The white sack-ground is detailed with coral, coins and a lantern in overglaze enamels. This composition impresses with professional, expensive-quality workmanship; every detail is rendered with fantastic precision and realism.

Collectors’ note: superior Kyoto-Satsuma quality with strong modelling and carefully controlled enamels — a piece that stands out in advanced collections.

Dimensions:

Height 23 cm; width 16 cm; depth 10 cm; weight 1246 g.

Condition:

Firing cracks from manufacture to heads and torso (expected for large Meiji earthenware); minor enamel chips and wear; robe with craquelure (see photos).

Satsuma ware originated in Satsuma province, Japan, during the late sixteenth century. It is an earthenware characterised by a pale crackle glaze decorated with detailed polychrome enamels and gilding, which gained immense international popularity during the Meiji period.

Satsuma ceramics are produced from a lightweight earthenware body coated in a finely crackled ivory glaze. Overglaze enamels and gold leaf or paint are applied by hand to create intricate patterns and facial details.

Authentic Meiji period pieces display precise hand-painted enamelling, delicate gold accents, and a distinct fine crackle texture under the surface glaze. Many pieces feature painted or impressed maker marks on the base, though unsigned export examples also exist.
