Pair of Royal Vienna Style Hand-painted Porcelain Jugs, C.1880

Description

Finely painted pair of Vienna-style porcelain jugs with domed lids and pink finials, richly decorated in ruby and emerald green grounds with tooled gilding. The oval panels depict mythological and allegorical subjects after Angelica Kauffmann, within gilt laurel frames; the reverse panels with gold medallions. Each base bears the blue shield mark and gilt number “25”, typical of quality Vienna-style porcelain continuing the Imperial tradition after 1864. Angelica Kauffmann (1741–1807), a distinguished Neoclassical painter and founder of the Royal Academy, was admired throughout Europe; her compositions were widely reproduced on porcelain.
