Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares produced in the Arita region of Hizen province and shipped via the port of Imari. Beginning in the seventeenth century, these ceramics gained widespread popularity across Europe, characterised by their distinct underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red enamels and gold gilding.

Antique Imari pieces were crafted from high-grade kaolin clay and fired at high temperatures to create hard-paste porcelain. Artisans applied cobalt blue decoration before the initial glaze firing, followed by hand-painted enamels and gold leaf detailing applied during subsequent lower-temperature kiln firings.

Authentic antique Imari chargers usually feature small glaze irregularities, spur marks on the base from kiln supports, and visible hand-painted variations in the underglaze cobalt blue. Genuine period pieces will also exhibit subtle wear to the gilded highlights and overglaze enamel details.

An Imari charger can be displayed upright on a carved timber stand positioned on a sideboard, mantlepiece, or within an open bookcase. Alternatively, using secure wall brackets allows the charger to serve as a focal point on a feature wall, contrasting against dark paint shades or neutral wood panelling.
