Originating in 19th-century Germany, a kugel is a heavy, blown-glass ornament lined internally with a silvering solution to create a reflective mirror finish.

Despite the name, most were constructed by blowing thick glass and coating the interior with a silver nitrate solution, finished with a metal cap and hanging ring.

Authentic pieces feature heavy hand-blown glass, distinct pontil marks concealed beneath the metal cap, and patinated interior silvering showing natural oxidisation.

Suspend the ornament near a window to catch natural daylight, display it inside a glass cloche, or cluster it with other objects on a decorative tray.

Dust gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid water or chemical cleaners, which can seep into the interior and degrade the silver coating.
