Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian cylinder music boxes feature a spring-driven mechanical movement housed within decorative wooden cabinetry, prominent during the mid-to-late nineteenth century. These instruments use revolving metal cylinders with strategically placed pins to pluck tuned steel comb teeth.

The outer cases were typically constructed using fine hardwoods such as rosewood, walnut, or mahogany, often enhanced with brass stringing and floral marquetry inlays. The interior movements were fabricated from cast iron plates, brass gear assemblies, and tempered steel combs.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut boxwood or fruitwood marquetry inlays, period-appropriate escutcheons, natural wood patination, and hand-tooled mechanical components. Original tune sheets pasted inside the lid or numbered comb teeth also indicate historical authenticity.

Position the box on a substantial sideboard, library desk, or mantelpiece where its intricate wood grain and marquetry can be appreciated up close. Styling alongside structured brass accents or contemporary framed botanical prints creates a balanced visual contrast.

Keep the piece in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood veneer from shrinking or cracking. Dust the casing with a soft microfibre cloth and apply microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect the polished finish, avoiding liquid cleaners on the mechanical elements.
