Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An iron-bound coffer from the 16th century is a heavy wooden storage chest reinforced with wrought-iron straps, hinges, and lockplates. Historically used to secure valuables, textiles, and official documents, these pieces represent early European furniture construction before specialised joinery became widespread.

These coffers were primarily constructed from thick, hand-sawn oak planks joined with heavy iron straps, rivets, and nails. Hand-forged wrought iron provided both structural strength against warping and security against forced entry, often featuring decorative lockplates and floral strap terminals.

Authentic early coffers feature hand-forged ironwork with visible hammer marks, irregular hand-cut rivets, and original lock mechanisms showing manual craftsmanship. The timber typically exhibits historic hand-hewn surface textures, natural shrinkage around iron fastenings, and dark age-related patination.

An iron-bound coffer serves as an architectural anchor piece in entryways, living rooms, or at the foot of a bed. Its wood grain and metallic detail contrast effectively against minimal plaster walls, modern linen upholstery, or contemporary stone surfaces.

Maintain a stable indoor environment with consistent humidity levels to prevent timber shrinkage or split formation. Apply a clear beeswax polish to the oak surfaces while keeping moisture away from the ironwork to prevent active corrosion or rust formation.
