19th century
Description

Tibetan art and textiles continue to fascinate us, while good examples become harder to find. However, this recent find is a truly beautiful weaving. It is a textile with charisma. Originally made as a saddle cover, it appears to have been used very sparingly and only on special occasions. The wool quality is wonderful, soft and fleecy, and it is in excellent condition with an even velvety pile. The abrashed sky-blue field is really catches the eye, and is complemented by the other subtle tones of pink, red, caramel and ivory. The classic field design is lovely, and is matched by the classic ivory border containing ancient symbolism. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tibetan saddle covers are traditional equestrian textiles hand-knotted in the Himalayan region for functional and decorative use on horseback.

These textiles are hand-knotted using local highland wool yarns on wool or cotton foundations, often incorporating leather reinforcement around the stirrup openings.

Authentic examples feature hand-spun wool, natural dye variations, precise central stirrup openings, and traditional iconography such as meander borders and floral motifs.

These compact woven textiles are frequently mounted in shadow frames as wall art or displayed flat across a wooden bench or console table.

Gently vacuum using a brushless suction attachment, store flat or rolled pile-out, and maintain display away from direct sunlight to preserve the vegetable dyes.
