Fine French Flintlock C1770 Holster Pistol, Signed “À Paris”, Circa 1770. 20-Bore Brass Barrel & Lock Plate

18th century
Description

A good example of an 18th-century French flintlock holster pistol, circa 1770, the lock plate signed “à Paris.” Of 20-bore with a round 11½-inch barrel, brass mounts finely engraved in rococo style, and full walnut stock of typical Parisian form with graceful wrist and fore-end. The butt cap, trigger guard and sideplate retain original chased decoration.

French locks and pistols signed “à Paris” were produced by a number of Parisian gunmakers during the late 18th century, often for officers. This example shows the elegant proportions and restrained ornament typical of French work of the Louis XVI period.

Overall length: approx. 44cm (17¼").

Mechanism functions, though as with all antique arms sold as a collector’s item only. Old repair to left side of butt end (see photos). In excellent condition for age & usage.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A flintlock holster pistol from this era is a single-shot black powder firearm fitted with a flint-striking ignition mechanism, intended for transport in saddle holsters by mounted personnel or travelers.

These firearms were constructed using dense hardwoods such as walnut for the stock, combined with cast or forged brass and steel for the barrel, lockplate, trigger guard, and decorative fittings.

Authenticity is indicated by period-correct maker signatures, maker or regional proof marks stamped into the metal, hand-carved stock contours, and age-consistent surface oxidisation on wood and metal.

Display the firearm mounted on a custom brass or timber desk stand, set inside a glazed shadow box, or placed alongside historical books on a dark wood bookshelf or desk.

Keep the wood stock nourished with microcrystalline wax, wipe metal elements with a soft dry cloth to prevent moisture accumulation, and store the object in a climate-controlled room.
