Antique French Walnut Armchair

19th century
For Sale by Culvertons
Description

This antique French walnut armchair or fauteuil (Circa 1900) was chosen by Culvertons because we felt it was particularly attractive, finely carved, and in a very good useable condition. In fact, it is one of two such armchairs we have recently brought into stock from the same private source. The other, which is being sold separately and can also be also viewed on Selling Antiques, is of a similar age and size, and traditionally upholstered in the same fine light gold and duck egg blue Damask fabric, however, their carved walnut show frames do differ. Each has a feather filled throw cushion. An elegant and comfortable armchair that is ready to be used and enjoyed either singly or as a matching pair. Please contact us if you are interested in purchasing both chairs. ONLY THIS CHAIR IN NOW AVAILABLE AS THE OTHER HAS BEEN SOLD.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XV style armchairs, or fauteuils, are characterised by curved silhouettes, asymmetrical carved scrollwork, cabriole legs, and padded armrests. Popularised during the 18th century, these seats were designed with exposed wooden frames to emphasise elegance and conversational comfort.

Authentic period armchairs were typically framed in dense hardwoods such as walnut, beech, or oak, using traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Internal construction relied on natural horsehair padding, burlap webbing, steel coil springs, and woven damask or velvet upholstery.

Authentic Rococo armchairs exhibit hand-carved decorative motifs, subtle variations in leg curvature, traditional peg joinery, and natural wear patterns on structural points. Inspecting the underside of the seat frame often reveals hand-sawn timber marks and age-appropriate oxidisation.

A French fauteuil functions as a statement accent chair in contemporary living areas, bedrooms, or reading nooks. Pairing the ornate carved wooden frame and patterned fabric with neutral minimalist backdrop elements creates a balanced contrast between historic detailing and modern design.

Dust the carved walnut frame regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to protect the wood finish. Keep upholstered sections away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading and vacuum gently using a low-suction soft brush attachment.
