Antique Presentation Insignia Box, Italian, Campaign Chest, Victorian, C.1900

19th century
Description

This is an antique presentation insignia box. An Italian, cased medal and epaulette campaign chest, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1900. A fascinating and rare piece of military presentation craftsmanship, complete with its protective outer case and ornate inner chest.

Rare example featuring a dual-case design with an outer protective chest and fine, inner display box

Outer case crafted in teak, with warm caramel tones and a lightly time-worn patina

Red, velvet-lined interior houses the insignia case, accessible via fall-front door

Lock escutcheon to the outer chest in working order — key present

Pair of brass carry handles set upon ornate pierced backplates for ease of transport

Inner presentation case crafted in fine walnut, with striking grain and rich caramel hues

Silvered metal geometric detail adorns the lid, lending refined visual interest

Interior lined in luxurious indigo velvet, offering a rich, tactile presentation space

Quartet of winged lion feet elevate the case with superb decorative form

The lion of St. Mark is symbolic of Venice and the wider region of Veneto

Replete with a brass lock escutcheon, also in working order — key present

An exceptional example of late Victorian Italian craftsmanship, this antique presentation insignia box would make a distinguished collector’s piece, ideal for display in a study, military office, or campaign furniture setting. Equally useful in a Masonic setting, within a sports club or other institution. Solid joints and construction, delivered ready for the home or official setting.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Campaign furniture and boxes were designed for military officers and travellers during the nineteenth century, built for durability and ease of transport with reinforced corners, flush fittings, and sturdy carrying handles.

These boxes typically feature dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, reinforced with flush-mounted brass straps, corners, and side handles designed to withstand frequent travel.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, flush brass hardware secured with screws, original lock mechanisms, and evidence of historical wear consistent with their age.

Position the box on an office desk, sideboard, or bookshelf to serve as a functional desktop organiser or a decorative accent alongside contemporary books and brass accessories.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically to protect the timber, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
