During the nineteenth century, glass display domes were popularised in homes to protect delicate decorative items, taxidermy, clocks, and dried floral arrangements from soot, dust, and atmospheric pollution.

Traditional domes were made from mouth-blown soda-lime glass, featuring a thin profile and slight surface variations. They sit inside a turned wooden base, often ebonised or mahogany, lined with velvet or felt.
