Doulton Burslem Pair of Beaker-form Vases with Three-dolphin Bases, C.1891

19th century
Description

Doulton Burslem, Staffordshire, c.1891. An original pair of rare beaker-form porcelain vases on three-dolphin architectural bases. Ivory ground with hand-painted floral bouquets; gilt inner rims and gilt decoration to the stepped triangular bases. Both bear the crowned Doulton Burslem mark (circular monogram), a dating indicator for the pre-Royal Burslem period. The small differences in height and weight are a hallmark of hand production—each vase was individually formed and painted. Collectable late-Victorian Doulton: refined shape, lively bouquets and bright gilding.

Dimensions:

Vase 1: 12.7 × 7.8 × 7.8 cm; 185 g

Vase 2: 12.4 × 7.8 × 7.8 cm; 170 g

Condition:

Excellent antique condition. Vase 1 shows minimal rubbing to the inner gilt rim; Vase 2 is in full, clean preservation. No chips, cracks or restorations.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced between 1882 and 1901 in Staffordshire, Doulton Burslem porcelain is recognised for refined ivory bone china bodies, intricate gilding, and hand-painted botanical motifs popular during the late Victorian era.

These decorative objects were typically crafted from fine bone china or earthen porcelain, painted with ceramic enamels, and finished with burnished gold leaf gilding over sculpted ceramic supports.

Authentic items feature printed factory backmarksoften containing a printed crown or maker mark depending on the yearalong with impressed model numbers and painter initial ciphers on the underside.

Position a paired set symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or console table to serve as decorative accents alongside modern framed artwork.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush. Avoid immersion in water, chemical cleaners, or abrasive rubbing, which can erode hand-painted enamels and gold leaf detailing.
