French Niderviller Porcelain Group of Boys, C.1815

Description

A French hard-paste porcelain figure group by Niderviller, circa 1815. Two boys tussling on a rocky base; animated modelling and bright enamels typical of the period.

Marks: factory unmarked; underside with incised No. 44. Fully glazed inner base with a dry footring, consistent with French manufacture.

Niderviller was founded in 1735 in Lorraine and is well regarded for early 19th-century figural production. A sought-after Niderviller figure of c.1815 with crisp modelling and good original color, appealing to serious collectors.

Dimensions:

Height 16.2 cm; Width 10.5 cm; Depth 10 cm; Weight 684 g

Condition:

Small firing line to the right leg; firing crack to the underside with a minor rim chip, all from manufacture. Otherwise very good antique condition. Stand not included.

Niderviller porcelain originates from the manufactory established in Lorraine, France, in the mid-eighteenth century. During the early nineteenth century, the factory produced detailed figurative groups depicting genre scenes, children, and classical motifs in polychrome hard-paste porcelain and earthenware.

Pieces were molded from hard-paste porcelain or earthenware clay, fired at high temperatures, and then hand-painted using metallic oxide enamels over the glaze before undergoing a secondary lower-temperature firing to set the colours.
