Hamadan Rug

1920 - 1940
Description

A larger than average Hamadan rug with a decorative allover design. It seems that these rugs with a repeated allover design are in vogue in comparison to the typical oriental rug with central medallions, certainly the larger Heriz carpets with this design outperform the medallion examples.

These cotton foundation rugs lie flat and are hard wearing. The central field is covered in stylised flowers and serrated leaves arranged in a complex lattice that slips under the four pink spandrels. This is an attractive rug which could be used in any setting.

Good condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Hamadan rugs originate from the historic city of Hamadan in western Iran and its surrounding weaving villages, known for producing durable hand-knotted textiles with varied geometric and floral designs.

These rugs are typically hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp foundation, utilising natural dyes derived from plants and minerals.

Authentic pieces usually feature a single-weft construction, symmetrical or Turkish knots, thick wool pile, and geometric medallion designs framed by distinct decorative borders.

A Hamadan rug provides visual warmth and texture when positioned beneath clean-lined contemporary furniture, anchoring living rooms, dining areas, or study spaces.

Vacuum gently without a rotating brush bar, rotate the rug annually to balance wear and light exposure, and rely on professional cleaning using mild wool-safe solutions.
