Description

A superb quality George III snuff box formed from a whole cowrie shell fitted with a bespoke silver mount and hinged cover with concealed flush hinge. The silver is beautifully decorated with bright cut engraved borders and a detailed scallop shell at the bottom. A contemporary engraved dedication "A present from J.M. to P.M." The silver is unmarked as is common. c.1800.

It measures 8.5cm (3 3/8") long, 6cm (2 3/8") wide and 4.2cm (1 5/8") high.

Condition is truly excellent; just a tiny dink to the edge of one of the sections of the hinge. No other damage, repair or restoration. Minimal handling wear, the silver and engraved decoration is lovely and crisp and the shell is also in super original condition.
