Antique Georgian Small Bow Front Mahogany Chest Bank of 4 Locking Drawers C1820

18th century
Description

Antique Georgian Bow front Mahogany Chest of 4 Drawers

An exceptional condition original bow front chest of drawers.

This is a superb example of a Georgian-era C1820 bow-front chest of drawers, crafted from richly figured Mahogany. Of a moderate size, this chest offers substantial storage without dominating a room, presenting a very appealing and classical form characterised by its gently curved front which softens its profile and adds elegance. The timber displays a wonderful, deep patina with beautiful, swirling grain on the top and drawer fronts, indicative of quality Mahogany.

A testament to the skill of the original cabinetmaker and the piece's remarkable conservation, the drawers are constructed with precise dovetail joints with Oak internal linings and are smoothly operating with virtually no drawer runner wear, a condition that is genuinely unusual to find in an item of this age. It features a desirable configuration of four drawers: two smaller 'short drawers' across the top, above two deeper, full-width drawers. All the drawers are fitted with their original, finely turned mahogany knob handles, which are entirely without repair and beautifully complement the warm wood tone. The drawers are all secured with their original warded locks, which are fully functional and operate smoothly with the accompanying antique key, which hangs from the central drawer. The chest is raised on splayed bracket feet to the rear and elegantly shaped, slightly taller bracket feet to the front, connected by a pleasingly serpentine apron.

Having been sympathetically restored and thoroughly checked over in our workshop, this piece is in excellent structural and cosmetic condition, ready for immediate placement in a home, offering both functionality and exceptional aesthetic appeal as a fine, well-preserved piece of Georgian cabinet-making.

Condition and Provenance As antiques, this chest of drawers shows signs of age and use. While in fantastic condition, expect minor marks consistent with historical pieces. This chest is of a great quality and is structurally sound, with no major damage that would detract from its beauty or functionality.
