The jardiniere of spiral moulded baluster form modelled with three lions masks with open jaws united by draped laurel garlands on spreading foot, the underside with two impressed factory marks, CLEMENT MASSIER GOLFE-JUAN (AM) the stand supported by a seated griffin, marked to one side with a similar oval CLEMENT MASSIER GOLFE-JUAN (AM) impressed factory mark, the jardiniere and stand 120cm high.
Notes: Born into a family of ceramists, Cle´ment Massier took an interest in the business from an early age. In 1883, Massier moved his operations to Golfe-Juan where he began developing his own luster glaze. His factory-gallery complex became a destination for the elite who summered in Monaco, Nice, and Cannes.
Lucien Le´vy-Dhurmer was hired on as Massier’s primary artistic director in 1887, the same year Massier produced his iridescent, metallic glaze for which he was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900. That same year Massier also became an of official
... supplier to the British crown.
Condition: Overall in good sound condition, with factory fired crazing to the glaze, some localised chips, knocks and old repairs. Pretty much what you would expect from an item of this age.
