Oil on board.

Signed 'Clark' (lower right). Framed behind glass.

Total width 46cm x 41cm high.

Provenance: Gifted directly from the artist to Fred Roe, author of the classic volume ‘The Nude from Cranach to Etty and Beyond’ Published by F. Lewis, London, 1944. (see old labels pasted to verso of picture).

Illustrated: in ‘The Nude from Cranach to Etty and Beyond’ plate 47.

The following is an extract: It is not because dear ‘Jimmy’ Clark was and old and valued friend that I draw him from his modest niche in the pantheon of artists. Nor is he remembered here simply because he happened to be a good and thoughtful painter of long experience and high resource. It is because his occasional nudes include some of masterly ability, handled with fine sense of structure and the texture of flesh.
