An original water colour signed (bottom left) with the date & “Roma 1855” (bottom right). In probably its original mount and frame, unopened and with old framers’ label to verso.

Franz Knebel (Swiss 1809 – 1877) was a noted painter active/lived in Switzerland. Franz Knebel is known for Vedutas in watercolour and oil paintings of views of Rome and its surroundings.

Franz Knebel, born in French-speaking Switzerland, went to Rome at the age of 13 where he remained for the rest of his carrier. He worked in the workshop of his godfather Franz Kaisermann, where he received his artistic training. Kaisermann adopted Knebel and appointed him as general heir, but expected him to produce vedutas in watercolor like him. Knebel shifted to oil painting, resulting in a quarrel with Kaisermann. He mainly created views of Rome and its southern surroundings, with the aqueduct of Claudius being one of his favorite motifs. The majority of his clientele being Grand Tourists. His paintings were exhibited in the Società degli Amatori e Cultori di Bella Arti in Rome in 1856 and 1865.

Grand Tour watercolour paintings were created primarily during the 18th and 19th centuries as topographical records and mementos for European travellers visiting classical sites across Italy, Greece, and the Mediterranean. These works focused on ancient architecture, classical ruins, and sweeping pastoral landscapes.

Artists used water-soluble pigments bound with gum arabic, painted directly onto heavy woven or laid rag paper. Paintings were subsequently mounted onto card and housed beneath protective glass within timber or gilded plaster frames.
