Elkington & Co 1859 Silver Plated Double Wine Coaster
£850 $1,125 €968
Elegant and rare Elkington & Co 1859 Silver Plated double wine coaster /carriage. A fine quality exemplar of design, ingenuity and Victorian practicality merged with humour. Twin coasters each to hold a bottle or decanter with open basket weave design profusely adorned with expertly cast and chased grapevine, vine leaf and fruit decorations. The coasters have turned wooden bases, are joined at the centre, mounted on articulated carriage style wheels enabling the drinks to be drawn along the table by the grapevine styled handle. Elkingtons started business as fine silver makers and gilders in 1830’s Birmingham England, soon thereafter making their name as pioneers and world leaders by inventing the electroplating of silver which was then displayed at The Great Exhibition of 1851. The quality of workmanship by such a revered company and depth of the silverplate ensure pieces such as this are much sought after. Many pieces were created for royal patrons and world leaders and now held by i...nternational museums. This carriage is marked for Elkington & Co 1859, a similar carriage made in 1863 is held by The Bellingrath Collection in Alabama, USA.
Coasters probably appeared as a solution for when cloths laid for formal dinners were cleared as the Ladies left the table. Felt backed wooden dishes were used to slide the wines and port between the gentlemen left at the table. The bottles ‘coasted’. In the 19th Century, most coasters were silver-plated and this twin carriage is very evident of the Georgian and Victorian love of efficiency, design, engineering and novelty.
The wooden bases within the coasters are 11cm wide. Postage Band C.
