Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the eighteenth century, tobacco imported from the Americas was processed in the Netherlands and stored in specialized tin-glazed earthenware vessels. Dutch potteries, particularly in Delft, produced decorated jars featuring cobalt blue inscriptions to label specific tobacco varieties for apothecaries and merchants.

These jars were crafted from low-fired earthenware coated in an opaque white tin glaze, which provided a smooth surface for hand-painted cobalt oxide decoration. They were typically fitted with turned brass or pewter lids to keep the contents airtight.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted brushwork with minor natural variations, tin-glaze crazing, and slight flaking or wear around the base and rim. The underside often displays a reddish or buff earthenware body beneath a raw lead glaze finish.

A Delftware tobacco jar serves as a focal accent on a wooden sideboard, bookcase, or mantelpiece. Pairing cobalt blue ceramics with dark timber surfaces or contemporary neutral palettes creates a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern design.

Dust ceramics gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid immersing glazed earthenware in water or using abrasive chemicals, as moisture can penetrate glazed micro-cracks and damage the underlying porous earthenware.
