Pen and Ink Sketch - Female Nudes by William Edward Frost [1810-1877]

19th century
Description

Pen and ink sketch signed bottom left and inscribed in the mount.

Height 11.5 x width 7cm. Total size including the frame 24.5 x 19.5cm

Notes on William Edward Frost (September 1810 – died 4 June 1877): An English painter of the Victorian era. Virtually alone among English artists in the middle Victorian period, he devoted his practice to the portrayal of the female nude.

Frost was educated in the schools of the Royal Academy, beginning in 1829; he established a reputation as a portrait painter before branching into historical and mythological subjects, including the subgenre of fairy painting that was characteristic of Victorian art. In 1839 he won the Royal Academy's gold medal for his Prometheus Bound, and in 1843 he won a prize in the Westminster Hall competition for his Una Alarmed by Fauns (a subject from Spenser's The Faerie Queene). He was elected an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1846, and a full member in 1870.

Frost is widely recognized as a follower of William Etty, who preceded him as the primary British painter of nudes in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Despite the prudishness of the Victorian era, Frost's relatively chaste nudes were popular, and his career was financially successful.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian academic figure studies are rooted in classical draughtsmanship, focusing on anatomical precision, draped female figures, and allegorical or mythological themes influenced by Renaissance and Greco-Roman traditions.

Artists during this period primarily utilised iron gall or carbon ink, graphite, and light watercolour washes on rag paper, often framed under glass with gilded mats or mounts.

Authentic period drawings exhibit natural paper ageing, period-appropriate ink or wash oxidisation, contemporary handwritten inscriptions or collector labels, and technical execution aligned with Royal Academy training.

Small-scale academic drawings pair well within a curated gallery wall or positioned in intimate spaces like reading nooks, balancing contemporary clean lines with historical texture.

Works on paper must be housed behind UV-filtering glass, mounted using acid-free archival materials, and kept in climate-controlled environments away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and foxing.
