FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and exported via the port of Imari. Originating in the seventeenth century, it is characterised by underglaze cobalt blue decoration combined with overglaze enamels, predominantly iron-red, green, and gold motifs.

Imari wares are crafted using kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to form a durable white porcelain vessel. Underglaze cobalt blue is painted onto the unglazed body prior to the initial firing, followed by the application of coloured overglaze enamels and gilt detailing before a secondary lower-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic historic pieces exhibit signs of hand painting, variations in cobalt blue underglaze density, and minor glaze surface irregularities. Bases often show spur marks where the item was supported in the kiln during firing, along with wear to the enamel and gilding consistent with age.

An Imari bowl can be positioned on a wooden stand as a focal centrepiece on a sideboard, console table, or open shelving unit. Its contrasting palette integrates effectively with both dark timber surfaces and neutral minimalist backdrops.

Clean Imari porcelain by hand using lukewarm water and a mild soap applied with a soft microfiber cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, chemical cleaners, or dishwasher cleaning, which can rub off or dull the surface enamel and delicate gilding.
