Description

A finely carved Shoushan stone seal of rectangular form, the crest superbly worked in high relief with two sinuous dragons pursuing a flaming pearl (“er long xi zhu”). The carving is notably delicate: confident undercutting between limbs and whiskers, crisp beading of the pearl, well-defined manes and dorsal spines, and clean transitions in the negative spaces. The seal face is unusual, combining Chinese characters with the Latin letters “FF”, suggesting a bespoke commission for a Western patron in the early Republic period.

The stone is an exceptional milky white with a soft inner glow; it is distinctly cool in hand and superior in finish to typical workshop pieces.

Dimensions/weight: approx. 8.5 × 7.6 × 3.2 cm; 329 g.

Condition: minor high-point nicks to the openwork (tips of whiskers/crests); seal face intact and legible. No visible restorations.

Context: Shoushan stones (Fujian) were prized by scholars for their waxy texture and translucency; hybrid inscriptions are rare and collectible.
