Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian mahogany commode is a specialized piece of 19th-century case furniture originally designed to house a chamber pot. To maintain discretion within private bedchambers, cabinetmakers designed these items to resemble small chests of drawers or side cupboards using disguised faux drawer fronts and hinged tops.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied over pine carcass wood. Construction hallmarks include hand-dovetailed joints, cast brass hinges, and turned timber knobs or brass drop handles.

Authentic period commodes feature hand-cut joinery, irregular tool marks, and age-consistent wear to the base and interior cavity. Disguised features like false drawers with stationary knobs and top lids supported by early brass fittings also indicate original mid-to-late 19th-century origin.

Although originally built for practical sanitation, these cabinets serve well as occasional side tables, unique bedside nightstands, or compact storage units in living rooms and hallways. The flat top surface provides space for lamps or decorative objects.

Keep the wood finish clean by wiping with a dry microfiber cloth and applying beeswax every few months to nourish the timber. Avoid placing the item in direct sunlight or near radiators to prevent the mahogany from drying, splitting, or fading.
