In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
When this top tray is lifted out it reveals a pen tray and glass inkwell and the box opens out to provide a writing slope with a tooled velvet surface.
It is an unusual configuration and it is in good condition for its age. There are some signs of age and use, some light surface marks and knocks and an old shrinkage split in the lid but no major damages. The interior is generally clean and tidy with some signs of age and wear and a couple of chips on the glass inkwell but overall the piece displays beautifully. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.
