Rare Georgian Elizabeth Morley Miniature "One Go" Silver Rum Individual Decanter Wine Label

18th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

A rare 18th century silver decanter label of very small size, made for a small individual decanter known as "one go" decanter that would have been taken up to bed in the evening holding a nightcap. It is a simple oval shape with double reeded edge and engraved for Rum. Made by the highly collected female silversmith Elizabeth Morley, an early example of her work, stamped with her maker initials and hallmarked with the lion passant, the head of King George and the London date letter for 1797.

It measures 3.2cm (1 1/4") wide by 1.7cm (5/8") high and it weighs with the chain 4g / 0.1ozt.

In excellent condition with no damage or repair and very minor handling wear, just a short scratch to the back. The marks are all lovely and clear.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A decanter label, historically known as a bottle ticket, is a small silver or silver-plated tag suspended around the neck of a glass decanter to identify spirits or wines, widely produced in Britain throughout the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

These items were crafted from sheet sterling silver, shaped and incised with reeded or chased borders, stamped with engraved lettering, and fitted with a suspension chain attached via solder loops.

Authentic pieces feature official British hallmarks stamped onto the front or reverse, including the lion passant mark, monarch profile duty mark, silver makers initials, and town mark.

Antique silver labels offer understated decorative interest when hung from glass decanters displayed on modern tray tables, drinks trolleys, or sideboard bar arrangements.

Wipe silver labels gently with a non-abrasive cotton polishing cloth, avoiding chemical dips that can strip dark oxidisation from hand-engraved text areas.
