Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Arts and Crafts movement, emerging in late 19th-century Britain, emphasized traditional craftsmanship, honest joinery, and functional design over mass factory production. Furniture pieces from this era feature clean lines, solid timber construction, and subtle decorative accents such as turned legs or hand-crafted hardware.

Writing desks from this period were commonly constructed from high-grade hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut. Writing surfaces were frequently inset with gold-tooled leather or skiver, while structural elements featured brass handles, iron castors, and dovetail jointing.

Authentic pieces manufactured by James Shoolbred & Co. often feature a stamped brass plaque or a blind stamp along the upper edge of a drawer. High-standard cabinetmaking details, such as precise dovetailing and stamped serial numbers on hardware, also indicate authentic production.

A classic writing desk can be integrated into a contemporary space as a compact home office workstation, a bedroom dressing table, or an entryway console. Pairing the dark timber with modern neutral walls and modern lighting creates a balanced scheme.

Timber surfaces should be dusted with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and treated periodically with natural beeswax polish. Inset leather surfaces require specialized leather balm to maintain moisture and prevent cracking, keeping the desk away from direct sunlight and radiators.
