19th century
Description

Fabulous late 18th-century/early 19th-century black basalt large bowl, featuring a neoclassical design and engine-turned body. Black basalt is a hard, dense, fine-grained stoneware developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the late 18th century, made from a reddish-brown clay that turns black during firing. Small firing belish to the body (tiny)This is one piece from a recently acquired collection; look out for the other pieces. Incredibly elegant and displays extremely well. Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Black basalt is a dense, unglazed matte-black stoneware developed in Staffordshire during the 18th century, perfected by Josiah Wedgwood and widely produced by contemporary English potteries.

Engine-turned decoration was executed on a specialised rose-engine lathe while the leather-hard clay turned, carving precise geometric fluting, reeding, and diced patterns into the exterior surface before firing.

Authentic pieces feature a fine-grained, smooth texture, precise engine-turned lathe work, crisp moulding, and often bear impressed maker marks on the base, exhibiting minimal surface sheen.

Black basalt bowls serve as striking accent pieces on sideboards, mantelpieces, or bookshelves, contrasting against pale wood or stone surfaces in minimalist and classical interiors.

Clean with lukewarm water and a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical detergents, abrasive scrubbers, or prolonged soaking to preserve the unglazed matte finish.
