Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency plaster torchere is a freestanding decorative light stand or sculpture, often crafted in the Neoclassical style during the early nineteenth century. Sculptors such as Humphrey Hopper created these functional pieces, depicting draped classical figures supporting light sources or storm shades.

These pieces were typically cast in plaster over iron armatures and finished with paint or bronzed patination to simulate patinated metal. The light fittings incorporated brass collars and glass hurricane shades or light bowls, supported by painted timber or stone plinths.

Authentic works by Humphrey Hopper often bear incised maker marks, dates, and location details near the base of the sculpture. Genuine pieces exhibit age-appropriate patination, original internal iron wire armatures, and hand-cast plaster details rather than modern resin uniformities.

A tall sculptural torchere provides architectural height when placed in a grand foyer, flanking a doorway, or positioned on a stair landing. It introduces strong Neoclassical geometry and drama when contrasted against neutral contemporary backgrounds.

Plaster sculptures should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid disturbing the painted or bronzed surface finish. Liquid solvents and abrasive cleaners must be avoided, as moisture causes irreversible damage to soft historic plaster.
