Antique Early Metalware Lighting 18thc Peerman & Candle Holder. Scottish / North European C1740-60.

An unusual example of an iron peerman and candleholder, as this one is complete with a drip tray, which is a feature you do not often see....this one is a ''table'' peerman.... the name peerman comes from the Scottish dialect for ''poorman'' as they were a cheap way of lighting your croft or cottage....the pine cleft was gripped in the sprung jaws and would burn more brightly and quickly than a candle and also give off an aromatic pleasant smell as opposed to the rushlight dipped in tallow. The peerman was mostly found in Scandinavia, Northern Germany, Austria , Switzerland and in the British Isles almost entirely in Scotland...this fine example is in very nice condition with a good colour.
