Kpm-school German Pair of Blanc-de-chine Figures “Grape Harvesters”, C.1880

19th century
Description

A 19th-century German pair of blanc-de-chine figures in the KPM-school manner: a young man with pole and baskets and a young woman with grapes, each raised on a rocaille scroll base. Hard-paste porcelain; notably heavy for the height; glossy white glaze; applied vine leaves and bead-grapes; rustic tree-trunk support to the boy. The modelling follows German Rococo pastoral types, here with workshop simplifications typical of the later 19th century. Underside with glazed interiors and central venting; to the boy’s base a sketchy underglaze cobalt stroke.

Collectible for interior display: the clean white surfaces and substantial mass give strong presence, and matched pairs of harvesters remain an established collecting niche.

Dimension:s

Boy: h. 25 cm; base 10.5 × 10.5 cm; 738 g. Girl: h. 24 cm; base 10 × 10 cm; 931 g.

Condition:

Both baskets lacking their arched handles; minor chips to leaves on the girl; the boy’s pole with a shortened tip; kiln hairline from the vent inside the boy’s base. No other visible restoration.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Blanc de Chine refers to a style of pure white glazed porcelain originally developed in Dehua, China, which inspired European porcelain manufacturers from the 18th century onwards to produce uncoloured or plain glazed figures focusing on form and sculpture.

These figures are crafted from hard-paste porcelain, composed of kaolin, feldspar, and quartz, finished with a clear, high-fired vitreous glaze that highlights intricate moulded and hand-carved details.

Authentic pieces feature crisp moulding detail, characteristic Rococo scrollwork bases, smooth glaze application without heavy pooling, and occasionally incised model numbers or blue underglaze factory marks on the underside.

Monochrome porcelain figures pair well with modern minimalist shelving, dark wooden sideboards, or marble mantelpieces where their monochromatic silhouette creates contrast against dark or textured backgrounds.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry artist brush to reach small crevices. For deeper cleaning, use lukewarm water with a mild detergent applied via a microfiber cloth, avoiding abrasive pads or immersion.
