A rare lozenge shaped sweetmeat* dish in the Topographical ‘named view’ style. The large central reserve delicately hand painted with a charming ‘View in Cumberland’, the dark cobalt blue undulating sides heavily gilded with foliate pattern and arrowhead border, the outer rim moulded rope ornament. Derby was renowned for employing excellent artists, amongst whom landscape specialist Daniel Lucas Snr whose style suggest he may have decorated this plate; another of his Cumberland views is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The base shows a clear hand drawn mark of jewelled crown above crossed batons with 3 dots and above D in orange which denotes the period between 1806 and 1810. At this time, Derby porcelain was at its zenith providing for the aristocracy and wealthy upper classes. Additionally we see the mark of the gilder ‘18’ a practice which stopped from 1810.
Our research suggests that this view may be a romantic portrayal of prestigious Dalemain House with Dacre Brid...ge,near Penrith in the beautiful Lake District**
This dish is in fantastic condition with no chips or cracks the Gilding is equally excellent and I doubt this dish has been used. Examination with magnifier reveals very light crazing to the glaze which is quite normal for the glazes of the period and in no way detracts from the beauty and value. Please see the photographs which form part of this description. Postage band A.
* that’s Georgian for delicious post-prandial sugary confections
**Dalemain House is open to visitors by appointment and has marvellous stately grounds. Hiking trails in the area make for a charming day in countryside not greatly changed in the 215 years since this dish might have graced the dinner table.
