Rare Georgian Jacobite-engraved "Stricken Oak" Multi Spiral Air Twist Wine Glass
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:The World is Made of Glass Ltd.
This is a rare Georgian, English, Jacobite, Stricken-Oak engraved multi spiral air twist stem wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.
The glass has a trumpet-shaped bowl measuring 6.7 cm (2.6 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved with Jacobite symbology. On one side there is an oak tree stump from which grows two oak leaves. According to Graham Seddon in his book - The Jacobites and their drinking glasses, page 98 - ''A few finely engraved glasses display what is known as the ''stricken oak''. .. The new sapling presumably represents the anticipated second restoration of the Stuarts''. The oak tree and its leaves were revered by Jacobites after Charles II escaped Cromwell''s men by hiding in the Boscobel oak. Indeed, accordi...ng to Seddon, Colonel William Careless, who hid in the oak tree alongside Charles, adopted the oak tree as part of his coat of arms. To verso there is another stylised tree without leaves. The bowl also features the engraved word ''Fiat'' and a star. Fiat can mean either ''Amen'' or ''may it come to pass'' according to Seddon and features on many Jacobite glasses as does the star. The star represents a new star that was meant to have been observed on the day that Bonnie Prince Charlie was born and Jacobites would kiss the star on the glass after the royal toast. The bowl sits on a multi spiral air twist stem that leads to a conical foot which measures 7.5 cm (3 inches) in diameter. The glass is 17.3 cm (~ 7 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.
Lead glass weighing in at 185 g. (~ 6 1/2 oz.).
