Strike Repeat Carriage Clock, Superb Condition

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to welcome into stock this lovely eight day Victorian carriage clock with strike and repeat function dating from circa 1880. The brass case is in fantastic condition as are the five bevelled glasses and the clock retains its vanity plate to the underside of the base.

The rack-striking movement has a lever platform and has just been serviced and cleaned so benefits from my three year guarantee. The platform escape wheel has a dynamic action and the full hours are struck every hour onto a spiral

gong with a single strike at every half hour. Original spade hands compliment the exquisite masked dial which is a real feature of this beauty.

This is a stunning, fully restored clock - no short guarantees or part restorations that other retailers offer - looking for its new forever home.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

The height measurement below of 7 inches is to the upturned handle.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A repeating carriage clock is a portable 19th-century timepiece fitted with a top handle, glass side panels, and a mechanical movement with a push-button mechanism that repeats the last hour or quarter struck.

Traditional carriage clocks were manufactured using heavy cast brass or gilt-bronze cases, bevelled glass plates, enamelled or silvered dial faces, and tempered steel movement parts.

Authentic period examples feature substantial brass weight, hand-bevelled glass panels, balance wheel escapements visible through top windows, and stamped maker marks or serial numbers on the back plate.

Position the clock on a fireplace mantelpiece, executive desk, or curated bookshelf alongside modern ceramic decorative items to provide historic interest and metallic warmth.

Dust the external brass housing regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid abrasive chemical polishes that damage protective lacquers, and have the internal mechanism serviced by a horologist every five years.
