Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Griffins, mythological creatures combining the body of a lion with the head and wings of an eagle, have traditionally symbolised power, vigilance, and protection. During the Gothic Revival and Victorian eras, griffin motifs were frequently incorporated into architectural elements, furniture, and decorative carvings for heraldic and symbolic display.

Historical griffin carvings were typically hand-carved from dense European hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. Craftsmen used chisels and gouges to detail individual feathers, scales, and fur, after which the wood was stained and finished with beeswax or lacquer.

Authentic period carvings usually exhibit uneven chisel marks on unexposed surfaces, natural wood shrinkage around joints, and aged patination in carved crevices. The presence of hand-cut joints on the plinths and signs of historical wax buildup also indicate age.

A pair of carved griffin figures can be styled flanking books on a heavy timber shelf, positioned symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, or arranged on a dark wood console table to introduce texture and historical contrast within a contemporary scheme.

Regular gentle dusting using a dry, soft-bristle brush removes dust from deep relief carving without scratching the timber. Applying high-grade clear beeswax polish once or twice a year preserves the finish, while keeping the items away from direct heat sources prevents wood movement and splitting.
