Original Late 19th Century Antique Watercolour Painting By H P Ditmas 1876 Boats & Figures Filey Bay Looking Towards Flamborough Head Yorkshire Coast Landscape
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Strickland & Russell
Type of artwork: Original Antique Watercolour
Artist and Signature: Colonel Harold Percy Ditmas (1853–1937) of York
Colonel Harold Percy Ditmas (1853–1937) was a solicitor and auxiliary officer who commanded the Durham Artillery from 1895, later serving with distinction in the Boer War and World War I. He was granted the honorary rank of Colonel in 1901. A member of a long-established York military family, Ditmas was also a skilled watercolourist. Often signing his works “H.P.D.”, he produced a series of topographical views from the 1870s to the early 20th century, recording Clifton, York, Shoeburyness, and other places connected with his life and service. Today his paintings are valued both as decorative works and as important historical records of vanished or altered locations.
Subject: A fine original 19th-century watercolour on paper, inscribed verso “Capt. P. Pitman 1876”. The scene depicts fishing boats with sails and rowing craft along a breezy shoreline, with figures ...strolling and gathering on the beach in Victorian attire. The chalk cliffs in the distance suggest a location on the Yorkshire coast, likely Flamborough Head.
The artist captures the lively movement of the waves with delicate brushwork, complemented by soft atmospheric colouring across sea and sky. A charming piece of maritime and Yorkshire interest.
Approximate age of artwork: Dated 1876
Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Mounted on backing card (unframed).
Condition Report: Some age toning, a few light marks, and edge wear consistent with age. Presents well overall, please see photos.
Size of painting 26 x 15 cm
