This is a stunning Victorian-era overmantel or pier mirror, richly decorated with ornate details and fine marquetry inlay. A truly striking piece, likely dating from the late 19th century (circa 1880-1900), it would originally have stood above a fireplace or in a formal hallway or parlour.
Crafted from mahogany or walnut, this grand mirror is adorned with elegant floral marquetry inlay and decorative carvings. It features three mirrors a large central one flanked by two narrow side mirrors, along with charming miniature tiered display shelves supported by turned spindles. This magnificent piece would elevate any period interior, making an ideal focal point for a hallway, dining room, or above a mantelpiece.
Key Features:
Beautiful floral marquetry inlay to the central frieze.
Ornate carved crest with scrollwork and a central motif.
Turned columns and finials.
Small integrated shelves for ornaments
...or lamps.
Original bevelled glass mirrors.
Condition:
Overall, this piece is structurally solid and well-preserved. The original bevelled mirror glass has some light ageing, foxing, and surface marks, all consistent with its age—but for nearly 150 years old, it remains in excellent condition. The woodwork is also well maintained, with only minor signs of wear to the edges and slight fading in places.
The thick bevelled glass is very well preserved with just a few dark patches to the edges.
Please note: The moulding on the front of the two central supports is missing, and there is a small section of marquetry loss that is only noticeable upon close inspection. The mirror retains its original solid wooden backing, adding to its authenticity.
A beautifully crafted and outstanding example of Victorian craftsmanship—this would have been an absolute fortune to purchase when new!
