Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The mahogany bureau became a quintessential piece of British furniture during the George III era in the mid-to-late eighteenth century. Designed to combine secure storage with a convenient slanted surface for writing, these items reflected the growth of private correspondence and record-keeping in historic homes.

Bureaux from this period were typically constructed using solid mahogany or rich mahogany veneers over pine or oak carcasses. Hardware, including keyhole escutcheons and handles, was cast in brass, while interior writing surfaces were often fitted with leather, small drawers, and pigeonholes.

Authentic Georgian bureaux feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer linings, thick secondary timber backboards, and natural shrinkage cracks along side panels. Look for cast brass fittings with age-appropriate oxidisation and signs of wear on the slant-front lid support lopers.

A antique bureau serves as a functional and compact work-from-home station in contemporary living rooms or bedrooms. Pairing dark mahogany timber against neutral, light-coloured walls or minimalist decor creates a refined contrast that highlights the wood grain and brass hardware.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and maintain the natural patina. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and sudden changes in humidity to prevent timber warping or cracking.
