Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, French foundries produced bronze statuettes depicting allegorical figures, such as harvest dancers or seasonal muses. These works reflected the influence of the Art Nouveau movement and classical mythology, designed primarily as decorative art for private residences.

These sculptures were typically created using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting methods. Once cast, the cold metal was hand-chased to refine detail and treated with chemical patinas to produce rich dark brown or metallic tone variations.

Authentic period bronzes exhibit crisp detail in drapery and hair, smooth join lines, and natural wear to the patina on high-relief areas. They generally feature weighted bases and may bear maker marks, foundry stamps, or French artist signatures on the rim of the base.

Positioning a pair of sculptural bronzes on either side of a mantelpiece or styled along a dark wood sideboard creates balanced symmetry. They also add visual texture when placed amongst books on a library shelf or paired with contemporary marble accessories.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clear delicate recessed areas. Avoid water, harsh chemical cleaners, or metal polishes, which strip the original chemical patina; a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax can be applied annually to preserve the finish.
