The sideboard is crafted from a beautiful, rich mahogany with a deep, lustrous grain. It retains its original French polished finish, which has been carefully cleaned and waxed, enhancing the wood's natural beauty and preserving its authentic, aged appearance.
The top of the sideboard features a large, rectangular mirror complete with its original plate glass embellished with a moulded frame and a highly decorative, carved crest at its peak. The mirror's frame is adorned with intricate carvings, and the back is designed to be easily removed by unscrewing five screws, leaving no visible signs on the top surface. This clever design allows the piece to be used as a standalone sideboard base if desired, offering versatility to the buyer. Flanking the mirror are two carved wooden shelf supports, each with a small shelf that would have originally been used for candles, providing both light and a warm ambiance to the dining room or hall.
The base of the sideboard is substantial and well-proportioned. It features two concealed drawers in the frieze, a classic design element of the period. These drawers are masterfully constructed with fine dovetail joints, a sign of quality craftsmanship. Below the drawers are two large doors, which are lockable via their original brass warded locks, (with key) complete with brass escutcheons to front. The doors conceal a surprisingly functional interior: a large cellarette drawer, historically used for storing wine or spirits, and two sturdy shelves, providing ample storage space.
The entire piece stands on a solid plinth base, giving it a strong and stable presence. The joinery is of the highest quality, and the overall construction is robust, a testament to the skilled artisans of the Victorian era. This sideboard is not only a beautiful decorative item but also a highly functional piece of furniture that would make a statement in any home.
Condition and Provenance As an antique, this sideboard does show signs of age and use. While in fantastic condition, expect minor marks consistent with historical pieces. The sideboard is of a great quality and is structurally sound, with no major damage that would detract from its beauty or functionality.
