Man with Large Bear, a Black Forest Figure Group, C 1890

19th century
Description

This brilliantly composed and carved walnut black forest figure group is most unusual. It depicts a large bear rearing up on its hind legs and attacking a man who is typically dressed in the rural style of forest workers at this time. He is defending himself with a sword in one hand which he has plunged into the bear and his other hand is pressed aggressively into the bear’s eye. They are standing on a naturalist base carved in the form of a fallen tree trunk amongst boulders. The movement and expression of both the man and the snarling bear are very realistic to this dire situation. The study is very finely carved in walnut with great detail and rich colour and patination. Circa 1890

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Black Forest carvings originated primarily in the Brienz region of Switzerland during the 19th century, featuring realistic depictions of wildlife, rustic scenes, and naturalistic figures created by skilled woodcarvers.

Artisans predominantly used native hardwoods such as lindenwood, walnut, and pearwood, shaping each piece from solid or joined timber blocks using hand gouges and chisels before applying dark stains and wax finishes.

Authentic pieces display distinct hand-chiselled tool marks, detailed surface textures representing fur or bark, organic proportions, and natural age-related patination rather than uniform machine-moulded surfaces.

Placing the sculpture on a dark wood mantelpiece, side table, or within an open bookshelf provides an organic focal point that contrasts well with both modern and traditional decor.

Dust the item regularly with a soft horsehair brush, position it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically to preserve the lustre.
