Circa 8th-Century AD Chinese Tang Dynasty Pottery Vase With Stand & Cover

Brief Description:

This is a large, rare and exceptional Original Chinese Tang Dynasty Three-Part Painted Pottery Vase with stand and cover.

Guaranteed to be from the 8th-9th-century AD (circa 618-907).

The outstanding example is complete with its original stand and cover, all of which were made from high-fired pottery.

The surface of all three sections is cold-painted in a base coat of a creamy white pigment with lotus leaf and floral patterns, further complemented by bright orange and green pigments, and a black outlined lid.

Each piece retains very good traces of pigment, especially in the main vase.

Such Stupa vases from this period have been found in the tombs of Buddhist monks as well as tombs connected to Tang dynasty imperial households.

The magnificent piece will look incredible displayed in either an ultra-modern home or a museum, such is the versatility and style of the vase.

Provenance: From the collection of the late Brian Page (1938-2018), who was a well-known Oriental art and antiques dealer from Brighton.

Ref: a very similar example was sold by Bonhams, Roger Keverne Ltd Moving On Sale, London, 11th May 2021, lot 61.

Indeed, it is truly a sight to behold, and it is an incredible surviving artefact that is between 1116 and 1405 years old!
