The numeric system represented by Roman numerals originated in ancient Rome and remained the usual way of writing numbers throughout Europe well into the Late Middle Ages. Numbers in this system are represented by combinations of letters from the Latin alphabet. Roman numerals, as used today, employ seven symbols, each with a fixed integer value, as follows: I for 1; V for 5, X for 10; L for 50; C for 100; D for 500; and M for 1000.

The use of Roman numerals continued long after the decline of the Roman Empire. From the 14th century on, Roman numerals began to be replaced in most contexts by the more convenient Arabic numerals; however, this process was gradual, and the use of Roman numerals persists in some minor applications to this day.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A system cane, also known as a gadget cane, is a walking stick that incorporates a secondary functional device within its structure, such as a watch, compass, flask, or measuring tool. These canes gained significant popularity during the 19th century as both functional items and fashionable novelties for gentlemen.

19th-century system canes were commonly crafted using exotic hardwoods such as snakewood, ebony, or malacca for the shaft. The handles and mounts often featured precious metals like sterling silver or gold, along with glass, enamel, and mechanical steel components for embedded gadgets.

Authentic period watch canes typically feature hand-engraved silver hallmarks, mechanical pocket watch movements appropriate to the era, and natural aged patina on both the metalwork and wood shaft. Inspecting the silver touchmarks and the construction of the bezel mounting helps verify period authenticity.

Antique canes are frequently displayed arranged together in a vintage brass or ceramic umbrella stand positioned in an entryway, or mounted horizontally in custom glass display cases along hallway or library walls.

To preserve the stick, wipe the wood shaft with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a light beeswax polish periodically to protect the timber finish. Clean silver mounts gently with a specialised silver polishing cloth, avoiding chemical dips or harsh cleansers near the glass and mechanical movement.
