Description

The plates are a collection of twelve ceramic pieces, each featuring a distinct black and white transfer-printed design. These designs depict various scenes related to traditional New England industries, such as whaling, cranberrying, grist milling, marble quarrying, lobstering, logging, sugaring, farming, shipbuilding, cod fishing, tobacco growing, and ice cutting.

They are manufactured by Josiah Wedgwood and Sons, identified as Queen's Ware, and bear the facsimile signature of the artist, Clare Leighton, whose original wood engravings inspired the designs. The plates are marked with "Wedgwood & Barlaston of Etruria" and an impressed date code, indicating their production around the early 1952's

FAQs

Designed in the mid-twentieth century by English wood engraver Clare Leighton, these series were produced by Wedgwood on fine Queens Ware earthenware to celebrate traditional regional industries and agricultural life.

Queens Ware is a durable, cream-coloured lead-glazed earthenware developed by Josiah Wedgwood. The complex detailed artwork is applied to the ceramic body using underglaze or overglaze transfer printing techniques before final firing.

Authentic pieces feature impressed or printed Wedgwood maker marks on the reverse, alongside the specific series name, title of the scene, and Clare Leightons artist signature integrated within the printed design.

A complete set can be displayed as a wall grid in a dining room or hall using invisible wire plate hangers, or arranged along picture ledges and sideboards to bring graphic monochrome accenting to minimalist spaces.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth and wash by hand using mild soapy water when necessary. Avoid abrasive scouring pads, harsh chemicals, and dishwasher usage to prevent crazing or wear to the glazed surface.
