Scandinavian Rya, Early 20th Century, 1.70m X 1.32m

1900 - 1920
Description

'Rya' is the term for a traditional Scandinavian wool rug with a long shaggy pile and a loose weave. Ryas have been woven for centuries and were often used as bedcovers in the cold climate. They usually have very high wool quality, with heavy pile. The designs are often highly original derived from Scandinavian folk art. This charming piece is quite typical. Dating to the early 20th century, it has the typical technical characteristics with fine quality wool and a high pile. The design is quite interesting. The central floral bouquet seems to be emerging out of a vase at the base of the field which also forms part of a stylised neo-classical leaf border. The black background is striking and gives the painterly composition a three-dimensional effect. Interestingly this piece is reminiscent of designs seen of contemporaneous kilims from Moldova in the Balkans and from Karabagh district of modern Azerbaijan. Could there be a common ancestry to the design? Highly decorative and in very good condition, this rug would transform many spaces.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Rya rug is a traditional Nordic hand-woven wool textile featuring a pile structure created using Ghiordes knots. Originating in Sweden, Norway, and Finland, these rugs were initially produced for bed coverings and insulation before evolving into decorative floor coverings and wall tapestries.

Traditional Rya rugs are hand-woven using a linen, hemp, or wool warp, with a wool yarn pile knotted directly onto the backing. The pile yarn is typically hand-spun and dyed with natural plant extracts, creating a soft texture and varied colour palette.

Authentic early 20th-century pieces feature hand-knotted pile weave, hand-dyed wool yarns displaying natural colour variations, and traditional Nordic folk motifs such as floral garlands, geometric shapes, or scrollwork patterns. Inspecting the reverse reveals visible hand-knotted rows and natural fibre backing.

A Scandinavian Rya rug can be positioned as a floor accent in living spaces or mounted on a wall as a textile art display. The floral motifs and dark background complement minimal, bohemian, or rustic modern room designs.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only attachment to prevent loosening the knotted wool pile. Keep the textile away from direct sunlight to minimise colour fading, and professional dry cleaning by a specialist textile conservator is recommended for spot removal.
