A rare and museum-worthy antique sterling silver cup, made in Chester in 1900 by George Nathan & Ridley Hayes. The design is directly inspired by the celebrated “Vaphio Cup” from Mycenaean Greece, one of the treasures of the Archaeological Museum of Athens.

The cup is decorated in superb high-relief chasing, with a dramatic scene of bulls and herdsman, echoing the power and vitality of the ancient prototype. Weighing a solid 314 g of sterling silver, this is a heavy, decorative and highly collectible piece.

Height 7.3 cm, top diameter 9.2 cm, base diameter 7.5 cm, width (including handle) 14 cm

Condition: Excellent antique condition, no damage or restoration, with an inscription to the base dated 1954. A perfect fusion of history, beauty and investment value — as silver prices have risen sharply in recent years, such weighty pieces are increasingly sought after.
